FirstMate is a great choice for dogs with sensitive skin

Our German Shepherd is sensitive to chicken and turkey - both make her itch incessantly and scratch and chew at herself. This food lists ocean fish meal as its first ingredient which at first made me wary. After researching, I learned that fish meal is a concentrated protein source made from cooked and dried fish. When high-quality fish meal is used (such as from wild-caught herring, anchovies, and sardines in FirstMate), it retains significant amounts of essential amino acids and omega-3 fatty acids, supporting muscle maintenance, skin health, and coat quality. While “deboned fish” or “fresh fish” might seem superior, they are mostly water (~70%), and once cooked, contribute less protein than fish meal. This food is especially good for dogs like mine prone to digestive or skin issues, as it also avoids common allergens like grains and peas. I also like that it uses sustainable, wild-caught sources and that the company owns its production facilities, allowing strict quality control from sourcing to packaging. It even contains glucosamine, which is always good for large dogs and breeds known for joint issues. She also loves it and the larger kibble size makes her eat it more slowly. It's also way more affordable than other brands I've tried. Big fan of FirstMate and this food.
